Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Michelle Osgood author of The Better to Kiss You With.
Hi Michelle thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book.
Hi, thanks for having me! I’m a writer who lives in Vancouver, BC, with my partner Elizabeth and our two black cats. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, and have been fascinated with storytelling for as long as I can remember. The Better to Kiss You With is a paranormal romance about Deanna, the moderator of an online werewolf role playing game, who falls for the mysterious woman living above her.
Tell us something no one else knows about your characters.
Nathan’s favourite nights are when Deanna goes out of town and asks him to dog sit Arthur. He lets Arthur share his bed, and loves nothing more than curling up with another warm body. Arthur isn’t the best bed partner, because his hair gets everywhere, but he’s a great cuddler, and has never once complained about Nathan snoring.
What inspires you in life or in writing?
What inspires me in life is people who have big, huge, impossible goals, and are completely unafraid of them. I have so much respect for anyone who can look past what we’re told our limits are, and who never stops working to achieve that goal.
What is the most important thing about your subject/genre that people need to know?
There’s been lots of discussion lately about the kinds of stories that queer women are allowed to be a part of—and I think it’s important to realize that queer women deserve happy endings. Queer women’s stories so often end in tragedy, in heartbreak, and those aren’t the kind of stories we deserve. We deserve to be a part of the romance genre, we deserve complex, interesting female characters who find other complex, interesting female characters, and fall in love. We deserve happily ever after.
How did you become involved in the subject/theme of your book?
One of the subjects that comes up in The Better to Kiss You With is online harassment. As I was writing this book, GamerGate was in full swing, and seeing so many women speak out about the threats, stalking, and harassment they were enduring infuriated me. They were experiencing very real terror, primarily perpetrated by men, and often the harassment only worsened after they dared to speak out. The lack of consequences the perpetrators of that kind of violence—because it is, undoubtedly, violence—faced was so, so unfair to me. I wanted to in some way acknowledge the fear these women endured.
What famous person (living or dead) would you like to meet and why?
I would love to meet LJ Smith, who wrote one of my favourite novels of all time, The Forbidden Game. It would be very cool to be able to tell her how much that story meant to me!
Thank you!
