A New Beginning

As some of you might have noticed, especially if you follow me on facebook, I’ve been in a pretty dark place recently. Things I’ve taken for granted crashed and burned, leaving my husband and me to pick up the pieces. (Not our marriage, though, thank the heavens. That’s stronger than ever)

But it has forced us to rethink the way we want to live our lifes and me to find a job. That didn’t go as planned, so I’m going to take a leap I’m very afraid of. But it’s actually what I dreamt about for a long time. I just wanted to plan it, make sure I have the necessary means and not start because I just don’t have another option right now. Currently, I’ve got a couple of interviews coming up, but I’m not holding my breath. I’m either too qualified or not qualified enough, which sucks.

There’s one thing, though, at which I’m good, I think. And that’s writing. Creating stories. And this is what I’m going to do. Writing full time (and translating, doing covers and running my newsletter). I’m scared, but I’m also very excited. I’ve got an awesome husband who supports me, I’ve got a awesome friends who do the same, which helps a bit.

So, I’m leaping in the hope of making enough money to support my family. It’s not how I wanted to start, but it’s how it will happen. Wish me luck. I’ll need it.

Love,

Chris

Writing Tip: Dragon Speech

I’ll try to post a few of my writing tips over the next weeks and share some of my working (or not) ideas.

Someone asked my about Dragon Speech, so here it comes: About 4 weeks ago, I’ve been trying to write about 2k every day, but after a while, my wrist started hurting really bad. I’ve had it before and will probably have it forever, as soon as I write too much (longhanded or at the computer). Anyway, I met a fellow author online who recommended Dragon to me. I figured I’d try it, since my hand hurt really bad.
My husband encouraged me, even though it’s pretty expensive (200€)

I bought it, did the training and it was horrible. I sounded like I was telling a story in school. I also read about authors dictating 3k in an hour. I didn’t even get 500 done. I can write about 1200 in an hour, when I’m typing fast. With Dragon, it was like pulling teeth. But I didn’t have a choice, so I stayed with it. I had to get used to form the sentence in my head and instead of sending it to my fingers, I had to speak it. I also had to learn to say Quotationmark, Comma, Period and so on, because you have to dictate everything.

About three days in, it got better. My hand didn’t hurt (that was the best part) and I finally managed to sound like “me”. I also made about 800-1000 words in an hour.

Now, four weeks into it, I can easily write 2500-3000 words in an hour. I also hit my personal goal of 5k on one day (my best have been 3,5k before that). Now I usually do at least one day per week where I write between 4 and 5k.
I stopped editing/fixing every sentence, except when I mess up a sentence beyond everything. (that still happens) I need to edit my ms anyway, and most of my sentences get changed when I edit, so I would only fix something I might cut later anyway. I also edit with the keyboard, since that’s something that I couldn’t do with Dragon.

It’s a lot to learn and don’t expect to be as fast as you are with typing, but in my eyes, it’s worth it. And speed will come with time. (It took me exactly 23 minutes to write my first 1k today.) And you’ll get used to dictate when your partner is around. That was very weird in the beginning. Now he simply ignores me 🙂

Also, since I work with a macbook Pro, I didn’t need anything except the software. If you have a windows PC, you will need a microphone. There’s an app for iphone, but I haven’t tried it yet.

If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to ask me. There’s also a support group on facebook. Let me know how your experiences went.

*Disclaimer* I bought Dragon Speech as everyone else does. These experiences are mine only and I received nothing in return for writing this. I also didn’t add any links here. Please search for Dragon or Nuance (that’s the software company) if you’re interested in purchasing it.

Release day and a much needed break

Photo of small bridge entering the morning mist

Mate Me, Hate Me, Date Me, Love Me releases in a few hours and I wanted to write a celebration post. I can’t even begin to tell you how happy I am because I never believed this book would be finished. But it is. It will release. The ARCs are sent out, the book is uploaded to Amazon and ARe. Everything is ready to go.

BUT, while I’m happy, I’m more. I’m tired. So very tired. I’ve been pushing myself, writing three to four hours every day, at night, when the kids are in bed, in the mornings, before they get up. Whenever I had time. I know,  three to four hours doesn’t sound much, but it is when you have a household, two kids and a 30 hour work week. For me, it’s a lot. Too much.

I love it, don’t get me wrong, but lately, it’s become a burden. Mate Me, Hate Me, Date Me, Love Me drained me. I read it so many times, I couldn’t see the words anymore. I edited it to hell and back. I played around with the cover, with the content, with everything. This book has grown on me, I love it dearly, but while I’m ready to release it to the world (I couldn’t stop it now anyway), I’m not ready to move on. I can’t start a new book. Okay, truth to be told, my next story sits at 15k, but I can’t write it now. I can’t bring myself to open my document.

I need a break. I’m empty. Totally. Once, I breathed words, I lived them, I needed them. They filled my life, pouring out of me, onto the page. Now, there is silence (It’s scary when the voices are suddenly silent!). I won’t lie and tell you that I’m not afraid. I’m just starting out, I have so many stories to write, what if the voices won’t come back?

Deep down inside of me, I know they WILL be back. A few already whisper, but they are too quiet for me to really hear them. There are stories I want to write, need to write, but first, I’m going to take a break. A week, most likely two. No writing, just reading and playing stupid online games, but I won’t open a document for the next two weeks.

I might get cranky or bitchy because of my break, so please bear with me. Maybe I find my voice back in a few days and start again with the passion once inside of me.

Have you experienced the same? What did you do about it?

Storming Love: Cameron & Daniel

10363115_1094198707271648_1982847250656475177_nI have a new release with MLR, Storming Love

It’s now available on Amazon and ARe

Traveling companions Daniel and Cameron not only share a trailer to save money, they also like to empty more than a bottle of cheap Italian wine, sitting outside and watching the sun go down. Daniel wouldn’t mind sharing a bed with Cameron as well, but they never talked about preferences and Cameron is straight anyway.

During an evening with too much wine, the truth comes out, and Daniel and Cameron give in to their desires. They heat up the sheets, but their night is cut short since they have to work the next day and climb up Monte Somma to photograph the Vesuvius.

But disaster strikes as the volcano erupts. Will they make it down the mountain in time? Or will they never find happiness together?

A lot of preorder links went up today and yesterday, and instead of writing I decided to collect them and post them here (I’ve already written 33 000 words this month and I’m currently feeling bit drained).

First, Saving Alex and Small Steps are now on KU, so if you want to read them for free, now would be the time. 🙂
