In The Last Night by Kassandra Lea, Eric gets one night a year and he always picks one particular Halloween. In Molly by Mychael Black, Detectives Cameron and Chase discover the murderer plaguing their city is more sinister than they could have known and not entirely human.

Excerpt: From Nine-Tenths of the Law by Kiernan Kelly

Let me set the scene for you. There I was, on my bed, naked, my asshole greased, and the butt plug inserted in it as far as possible, angled to hit my prostate, the vibrating option turned on. I was fisting my cock, rock hard and slick with lube, edging so close to orgasm my balls felt ready to pop.

“Fuck, it’s dark in here.”

I believe I may have completely levitated off the mattress. I know my hard-on wilted like an ice sculpture in a microwave. Scanning the bedroom, I looked for an intruder, but could see no one.

“Tight, too. I always did love a tight, hot ass.”

The speaker was British; the voice, deep and sexy, and coming from right behind me. I spun around in a circle a few times, trying to catch the person I assumed could only be a machete-wielding-chainsaw-brandishing-serial killer that happened to have a silky, dark chocolate voice, but I couldn’t see anyone. As far as I could discover, I was alone, which of course meant I’d imagined the voice.

“What are you doing, Olivier? Stop it at once. You’re making me dizzy.”

Olivier? No one had called me that in years, not since… Hearing the old nickname was shocking enough to leach the fear out of me for a minute. It took me another full sixty seconds to realize the deliciously decadent voice was not only real, but also somewhat familiar, and more importantly, coming from my ass.

That’s when I finally fainted.

Exclusive Excerpt:

Sitting heavily onto the large armchair, I rested my elbows on my knees and covered my face, only then realizing soil stained my hands. No wonder the she-wolves gave me sideways glances. Who in their right mind handled newborns this dirty? Grimacing, I rose and entered the attached bathroom to wash up then decided to take a shower. As I suspected, the armoires held my clothes, which I grabbed before locking myself in the washroom.

My hands trembled as I undressed. I was floundering and the warriors would be looking to me to guide them. I couldn’t allow myself to fall back into that place where I was determined to lay in the earth with Tristan. Hell, I was having a hard time believing I hadn’t lost my mind, especially when I closed my eyes and Tristan’s ravaged face was there to greet me, a tear sliding from the corner of his good eye.

How did I move past this sense of desolation? Always, I had Tristan. Now I was alone, but for how long? Ashur owed me answers, but if I looked upon him right now, I’d murder him.

Guest Post:

Anat: The Patron Goddess of the Lycan Warriors

When putting together Sumeria’s Sons, I wanted to the god of war to be a goddess. Inanna came up on the list but once I looked into why the Goddess of Sacred Prostitution would also have the title of Goddess of War, I found she really wasn’t. What happened was in the pre-Babylonian texts, Inanna borrowed Ereshkigal’s power to raise the dead in order to threaten the Council of Gods. She was in a tiff over being turned down by Gilgamesh and wanted his head, so to speak, but the council told her no. After gaining an ally in Ereshkigal, she threatened to raise the dead and the council agreed to send Gugalanna against Gilgamesh. So really, not a Goddess of War at all because her power was borrowed.

I had to look elsewhere, so I pulled a Semitic goddess from the northwest and gave the Lycan Anat, a violent, virgin war-goddess. In her Canaanite and Phoenician roots, she was sometimes the consort to Ba’al. Although, with her being a virgin goddess, being his consort definitely nixed the sex. She was famous for slaughtering Ba’al’s worshipers once. Makes you wonder what in the world he did to her to cause her to lose it like that.

The descriptions of her blood thirstiness are graphic. “Anat appears as a fierce, wild and furious warrior in a battle, wading knee-deep in blood, striking off heads, cutting off hands, binding the heads to her torso and the hands in her sash, driving out the old men and townsfolk with her arrows, her heart filled with joy.” She boasted a kill list of other gods or those who were favored by the gods, including Mot the God of Death who she thought murdered her sometimes consort, Ba’al. The way she took him down honestly sounds very axe-murderish—throwing him into the millstone to have him ground down for the birds to eat. There was a reason she was feared. I couldn’t have asked for a more kickass warrior goddess.

Later in Hebrew texts, the hero Shamgar, son of Anat, was mentioned in Judges (3.31; 5:6). A debated started about whether it was understood Shamgar was considered a demi-god or not. The conclusion was that being labeled as “Son of Anat” was a military title indicating the warrior was under Anat’s protection. Pretty cool, huh?

I took the title and ran with it. The Lycans have the Order of Anat that encompasses all of their Lupe Warriors and they’re called the warriors of Anat. About one percent of Lupes born are female. The prowess of the Daughters of Anat on the battlefield is legendary among the warriors. Tristan and Ushna are guardians over Theo’s three children, Justus, Dawn, and Neona. Justus and his sister, Neona, were born warriors and I’m very tempted to pen a standalone for Neoma. ^_^

A huge thank you for allowing me to be a guest on the blog today! Throughout the blog tour for Dragon’s Eye, I hope you enjoy the behind the scenes look at the gods and mythos, and how they play a part in Sumeria’s Sons. For a visual representation, please visit my Pinterest page. (https://www.pinterest.com/lexiander1/sumeria-sons-inspirations/) During the tour I discuss the Sumerian pantheon, about who and what the Gods/Goddess are, and how I use them. Make sure you stop by the other blogs to get a complete look at the Gods and Goddess the Lycan’s follow.

BookBlast, Giveaway: Sexual Frankenstein by TC Blue

sexualfrankenstein1400Author Name: TC Blue

Book Name: Sexual Frankenstein

Release Date: September 2, 2015

Blurb:

Tony & Darian have been friends and playing together in their band, Sexual Frankenstein, for a few years, and while they really are friends, they’ve never crossed that line — no matter how much they may want to — because of their band and friendship, as well as not thinking the other is interested.

The apparent interest in one of them, from their hot and very glam new singer, brings things to a head as long-buried jealousies push to the fore, leading both Tony and Darian to reevaluate what they already have and what they so desperately want.

This story previously appeared in the Po’boys Anthology, published by Torquere Press.

Pages or Words: 13,000 words

Categories: Contemporary, M/M Romance

Excerpt:

Yeah, the voice was bad enough because it was so good, but even worse was the fact that Andy was too fucking good-looking and not at all shy. Andy would never sit around for two years, yearning for someone who had never once seemed to be interested, just because he was too scared to make a move. No, Tony was pretty sure that Andy, with his make-up and highlights, his dramatic wardrobe and even more dramatic nature, would just stroll up to whoever caught his eye and say something to make that person laugh. Something to make their blue eyes shine and crinkle at the corners. Something to have that person’s slightly wavy, collar-length dark-blond hair moving wildly while that same person’s soft-looking, pink-lipped mouth opened in a grin to reveal almost perfect teeth, aside from the one lateral incisor on the left that was crooked and overlapped that left front tooth just enough to be cute and quirky rather than snaggly.

Add in the stage moves that Andy somehow kept managing to pull off without stumbling or tripping over his own feet — or any of the numerous cables covering the stage — and Tony definitely hated the bastard. More than hated him when the jerk took each and every opportunity to maneuver over to Darian’s side and rub up against him, singing into his eyes, looking wicked and delicious. Eight times so far, because Tony was keeping count, and Darian didn’t seem to mind even a little, damn it.

My own fault. Should have manned up and taken my shot before, and now it’s too late. I’m a fucking idiot. And how appropriate was it that the next song on their playlist was the old Cinderella ballad “Don’t Know What You Got”? Not that Tony had ever broken anyone’s heart, but he totally understood the emotion behind the chorus.

Meet TC Blue:

Contrary to popular opinion, TC Blue was not raised by wolves. Nor did she spring, fully formed, from the forehead of a god, instead entering the world in the usual manner.

A true jack-of-all-trades and master of none (otherwise known as flighty and unable to make a decision and stick with it), she currently resides near the east coast where she does her best to avoid politics and religions as a general rule.

TC can usually be found sitting in front of her computer, trying to wrangle rabid and numerous plot bunnies, though her muses insist that she not be too hard on the poor little fluffy things. (Poor little fluffy things with sharp teeth and claws, but whatever. Muses don’t seem to care much about the possible bloodshed if the bunnies think TC’s not writing quickly enough.)

One thing sure to calm the bunnies is hearing from readers, so please feel free to contact TC at tcblue@live.com or stalk her: on Twitter — @tc_blue, on Facebook — T.c. Blue.

BlogTour, Review: Surrounded by Crimson by Lexi Ander (Sumeria’s Sons #4)

PrintAuthor Name: Lexi Ander

Book Name: Surrounded by Crimson

Series: Sumeria’s Sons

Book: Four

Series should be read in order for maximum enjoyment.

Release Date: July 1, 2015

Blurb:

Tristan has agreed to bond with Ushna but there is still much to do and returning to Tribe Enkidu puts everyone on edge. Tristan is being stalked like prey all the while fighting depression as he mourns the loss of Nikita and enduring a battle of wills with the Elder Council over his birthright. The pleading of his adoptive daughter only adds still more stress to the situation.

Stumbling onto a secret prison while searching for Ushna leads Tristan to risk everything to free a lost God. But breaking the tie to his Flame has more repercussions than Tristan knew and the assistance of a forgotten Goddess and a centuries old lover may not be enough to save him.

Pages or Words: 48,000 words

Categories: M/M Romance, Menage/Poly, Paranormal, Urban Fantasy

Excerpt:

Ushna was out of the car and greeting his parents before I unbuckled the seatbelt. Hami wasn’t as tall as his son but he was wide, very wide, barrel-chested with a set of deltoids on him the size of small children. His dark hair was cut above the ears and I’d never seen the man without at least three days growth of facial hair. It looked good on him. That kind of scruff made me resemble a bum.

Donya was tall and lean, one of those women who had a natural sway when she walked. Her blue-black hair fell to her waist in thick glossy waves. Her skin was a deep almond, darker than her husband’s or son’s, and her bright, emerald-green eyes were large and expressive.

They both greeted Ushna with festive exuberance, and why not? I’d kept him away from them for a very long time. I observed them for a moment over the hood of the SUV. Hami picked his son up in a bear hug, laughing loud and boisterous. Donya took his face between her palms as she gazed deeply into his bi-colored eyes—eyes that were forever changed by me. At that thought, I wondered how they truly perceived me. My stomach rolled with anxiety-induced queasiness.

With all the grace of someone my size, I made my way into the house, leaving Ushna to his family reunion. I had hoped we wouldn’t see them until after the children were born. I’d entered the home stretch of my pregnancy. Even with the ring of illusion, I had a hard time hiding my condition. Early in my pregnancy, Gregori had fashioned a ring of magic, creating the illusion that hid my continually growing stomach and constructed a normal appearance.

A pregnant male wasn’t something we wanted to explain to humans. With the looming threat of assassination, if my identity was discovered, we thought it best to continue to keep my birthright a secret until after the children were born. So I’d continue to wear the illusion even though the ring wasn’t much help now. The giveaway was in the walk and the way I stood. People could see there was something different by how I held my body and it couldn’t be helped. I was able to hurry, in spurts, and then I lumbered like an elephant—very National Geographic.

Neesie followed me into the kitchen. She was dressed differently than what I’d become accustomed to. Gone were the combat boots, black jeans, and white tees. She wore a pale blue silk blouse, a pinstriped pencil skirt, and knee-high black stiletto boots. She appeared fierce in a whole new way.

“Why didn’t you wait and greet Ushna’s parents?” she asked.

With a plate in hand, I inspected the cold cuts tray that sat on the kitchen counter. I was starved and wanted something quick to eat before everyone came in. When I didn’t answer Neesie, she took the plate from me and started placing fresh vegetables on it.

“I thought I’d give them some time to catch up,” I finally replied. It wasn’t a complete lie. “They haven’t had their son to themselves in quite some time. They don’t need me hanging out in the background.”

Neesie pinned me with her golden-brown gaze. “That is such bullshit and you know it. What’s the real issue?”

I quirked a smile at her. “You know I love ya?”

“Yes, and you’re the one who called me for dating advice because you suck at subtle. Your ‘hey moron, get your hands off my sister‘ ranked right up there.”

“I can’t help it if Mr. Octopus Arms was oblivious to his audience.”

“Go ahead and keep playing that song because I know you still refer to him as Lonnie Fucking-Fowler. Before you walked into the house, your face turned green and you practically sprinted in here.”

“Ahh, stampede!” I gave mock crowd screams. Neesie was not impressed.

“Spill, jackass.” She shoved a full plate into my hands and a chair under my ass. Neesie glared at me but her expression was filled with concern.

“Fine, you tyrant. I wanted to make a good impression. I wanted to be able to show them that I am a strong partner and worthy of their son’s love and devotion. But right now I’m huge, and miserable, and swollen, and hungry. Why did you give me carrots? You know I hate carrots. You’re trying to torture me, aren’t you? I’m an elephant, not a rabbit. I get like peanuts or something, not Bugs Bunny hand-me-downs.” I threw the carrot at my cackling sister. The woman was not remorseful.

“Tristan.”

I threw another carrot at Neesie before turning to see who called for me. I swallowed a curse as I faced Donya. She stood in the doorway, her large green eyes soft and liquid as she searched my expression.

“Ma’am?” Embarrassingly, my voice cracked like I was fourteen years old.

“How can we not be proud of you, son?” Donya crossed the room in a smooth glide and gently took me in her arms. “We’ve always been proud of you, Tristan, don’t ever believe differently.” Tentatively I embraced her in return and ignored Neesie’s sniffles.

Review:

The story about Tristan and Ushna continues, and Lexi manages (again) to pull us into their world. The fight gets even harder, and finally, Ushna and Tristan find their third. I won’t say more, but there is a lot of fight in there, a lot of hot sex and of course, babies! (yes, mean, I know, but just go read for yourself. You won’t regret it.)

It’s well written and you shouldn’t miss it. But, you need to have read the other ones first, otherwise you won’t have any idea what the book is about.

5 stars from me

Excerpt:
Jordan’s muscles slackened, and cold anticipation formed a lump in his stomach. Rick isn’t really jealous?

But the feral look in Rick’s eyes said he was.

The hand on his shoulder nudged him toward the ballroom. Did Rick want him? Was that why he’d agreed to come stag?

Rick’s fingers idly tapped the small of Jordan’s back as they walked. The whisper of contact was odd and possessive, and it sent Jordan’s blood surging to all the wrong places. He shouldn’t have had that second scotch. He was relaxed and horny, especially with Rick so close, when he needed to keep his wits about him. Rick would never forgive him if he let something slip about their past together in front of their high school friends.

The tapping continued, revving his nerves into high gear. His fly pressed painfully against his flesh. He turned to Rick. “Will you stop touching me?”

Rick’s easy smile fled. “Why?”

He grabbed the collar of Rick’s shirt and said in his ear, “Because, dumbass, you’re making me hard.”

Rick raised his brows and smirked. They moved forward again. The tapping slowed but didn’t stop.

Excerpt:
She was so beautiful that she looked as if she was only sleeping, but clearly she’d cried tears of blood. She was dressed in clothing that appeared expensive but was cheaply made; a poor girl wanting only for a day to live beyond her means. From far away, she seemed to wear pearls and sapphires. Up close, the pearls were her teeth, and the sapphires were her plucked-out eyes. And the golden sash around the waist of her plum-colored taffeta gown? It was made of hair. She also wore a heart-shaped locket, clearly her own. Although tarnished somewhat, and made of much cheaper material, it was of a similar design to Anthea’s, provoking an odd frisson of familiarity. Whatever our profession, whatever our station in life, we’re all women, Katriona mused as she crouched beside the corpse. And if one of us is in danger… then we all are.

“The gloves are made from his previous victim’s skin, by the way,” pointed out a constable. “At least, they’re the same color.”

The girl’s mouth had been filled with dirt; the sort of unremarkable dirt that could have come from anywhere in London. Some of it was smeared across her chin. In her lap, she held another girl’s head.

“Salome and the head of John the Baptist.” That came from Anthea, who was tilting her head at the scene.

“Sorry, what?” Inspector Claybrook looked up from the body.

“The sash, the gown… if you look at the pose and jewelry alone, it’s an exact replica of one of the paintings in the Louvre.” Before anyone asked her how she knew that, she added “When I’m in Paris, I go there often to clear my mind.”

“This is his art,” Katriona murmured thoughtfully. This woman would offer her another piece of the puzzle, she was sure of it.

“I’ll hold your gloves for you,” Anthea said in an undertone.

Katriona removed them and held them out with an almost imperceptible nod. Anthea transferred them to her reticule.

There were still other people around, but for all intents and purposes, it had become just Katriona and the corpse. This small, powerful figure was radiating something inexplicable—still delicate, but somehow frightening. Her eyes were so blue that they could drown a man.

She touched the decapitated head first. I had a dog. I had a dog. Who will feed my dog?

“I’m sorry, but that’s all I can get. She’s been dead for days. She’s well-preserved, but I can’t read her. I suspect it’s from the same woman we found the other day, but…” If I died, she thought, I’d be so afraid for Sentinel. She felt closer than ever to this dead girl, the one whose name she did not know.

“At least it was only a whore,” a constable murmured behind her. Instantly Katriona wanted to tear off his head and eat him whole.

Men! They visit prostitutes, yet they look down on them. None of these girls deserve to be told “Your friend is dead” by an uncaring and contemptuous man.

Katriona made an impulsive decision. She crouched further over the corpse, using her body to shield her movements, and ripped the heart locket from her neck, tugging until the cheap chain broke. Surreptitiously, she dropped it into her white kid boot. Next, she ran her hands through the woman’s curly dark hair. Her voice changed, becoming noticeably less cultured; now there was a rich warmth to it and a Cockney accent.

“I’m really excited because I’m getting paid extra to spend the night with a man where he lives instead of where I live. Maybe I can pocket something good on the way out. He’s real handsome. Smooth hands, long fingers… so then I said, do you want a brush, then? And he said, he said, ‘Have a drink’. He offers me… something. Dunno what it is, never had it before, but I’m excited. When I wake up, I’m—”

Katriona wavered, but held her grip on the memories. She would follow this to the end.

“—I can smell earth. ‘Run, little rabbit,’ he says. ‘Run away from the hunter’s horn.’ But I’m not running; it’s too dark. Blacker than night. Rather die than be in the dark, than lose my way in the dark down in the earth. I fight like a tiger. I try to scratch his face but he grabs my wrists and—God, he’s strong! Kick him in the jewels and he moves out of the way—too damn fast, too damn fast—where’d he go? Hands around my neck—squeezing the life out of me—I can’t breathe! Please don’t kill me. Please, no, no, no… Now I’m afraid but I’m angry, and I hold his gaze until my eyes roll back. He told me I made a mistake, I deserved to die because he couldn’t have imagined the girl he loved saying such dirty things.

“‘You’re too wildly sexual.’ That’s what he said. And he beat me where the bruises wouldn’t show. I fought like a tiger; tell them I fought. Salome with her head in her hand and her mouth full of dirt—this is his art!”

All at once, Katriona’s aura of power seemed to startle back inside her skin. Her eyes opened. She lurched backward, wide-eyed and pale. Anthea was at her side at once, and Katriona held onto her for stability.

“Are you going to be all right?” Anthea’s voice was as low and mesmerizing as ever—as beautiful as a hypnotist’s—and Katriona followed the sound of it as it led her out of her fear. She buried her head in Anthea’s neck, taking in the twin fragrances of jasmine and bergamot. Anthea made her feel like the best and strongest version of herself, a little less neurotic and a little more rational. She thought she wanted Anthea around for the rest of her life.

A flash of thought: If she holds onto me any longer, people will think we’re betrothed. Did it come from Anthea or from her? She couldn’t quite care, couldn’t tell. Reluctantly, because Katriona knew what it was like when people held onto her too tightly or for too long, she let go.

Anthea repeated the question. “Are you going to be all right?”

“Yes.” Now that you’re here.

Ding…. He heard his phone go off again as he was grabbing an orange from the fridge. Nathan set the orange on the counter and pulled his phone out of his pocket.

Maybe I’m jumping the gun here. What are you into?

Nathan wasn’t quite sure how to answer that. He leaned back against the kitchen counter and stared at the keypad for a second before responding. Guys?

Ding…. I’m literally shaking my head at you right now….

Ding…. Josh instantly followed up his last text. I meant what turns you on about a guy. Eyes? A nice ass? I need to know what I’m working with here.

Nathan felt like the entire world could see his words as he typed his response. I think men’s feet are sexy.

Ding…  Josh responded, apparently not fazed at all by Nathan’s answer. All right then, let’s start at the toes and work our way up.

Interview:

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing C.C. Dado author of Imposter in Zebra-striped Briefs.

Chris: Hi C.C., thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book.

C.C.: I am a native of the Pacific Northwest. I’m a bit of a hypochondriac sundae, with claustrophobic sprinkles, and a big cherry of anxiety on top, so I don’t travel much. I read and write to relax my mind. I tend to write painfully awkward, usually embarrassing, romance because long confident gazes followed by sexy dancing NEVER happens to me.

Imposter in Zebra-striped Briefs is about taking chances, making friends and falling for someone that you never thought you could have.

Chris: Was there a basis for you story? A previous experience or something else?

C.C.: I wanted this book to be centered around Josh and Brandon’s wedding from ‘That Place Across the Hall’ (a short story I wrote in a separate anthology) but I did not what them to be the main characters. Having Josh take the new guy under his wing worked well for me to tell both stories intertwined.

Chris: What skills do you think a writer needs?

C.C.: A creative mind, a good editor and drive.

Chris: What for you is the perfect book hero?

C.C.: The perfect hero to me depends on the story but my personal favorite is someone rough, with glimpses of a softer side.

Chris: Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

C.C.: The rules of grammar.

Chris: Tell us about your favorite childhood book.

C.C.: Donald Duck and the One Bear, was my favorite book growing up. It’s a spin on Goldilocks and the three bears.

Chris: Thank you for the interview!

BlogTour, Interview, Giveaway: The Luckiest by Mila McWarren

TheLuckiest 4x6px COVER-FrontAuthor Name: Mila McWarren

Book Name: The Luckiest

Release Date: July 7, 2015

Blurb:

When New York-based memoirist Aaron Wilkinson gathers with his high school friends to marry off two of their own, he is forced to spend a week with Nik, the boy who broke his heart.

As they settle into the Texas beach house where the nuptials will be performed, Nik quickly makes his intentions clear: he wants Aaron back. “He’s coming hard, baby,” a friend warns, setting the tone for a week of transition where Aaron and Nik must decide if they are playing for keeps.

Pages or Words: 256 pages

Categories: Contemporary, Gay fiction, M/M Romance, New Adult, Romance

Excerpt:

Aaron finishes the song and Stephanie snatches the mic out of his hand, crooks her finger at Nik and launches them into a reprise of their performance of “Dancing on My Own” from the homecoming weekend they all spent here at the house back in senior year. Stephanie still has questionable rhythm and tragic pitch—she loves to sing, which is why they have a karaoke machine in this house, but it’s one thing she will admit she doesn’t have much of a gift for—but there’s a reason Nik majored in music at The University of Texas, and his voice has come a long way.

Somehow, this deliberate throwback to a memory that was never anything but happy seems different than what Aaron has just done. He sits on the sofa, flanked by Alex and Jasmine, hating them both a little for participating in it even while he smiles. Nik dances—how can you not, with this song—but he still watches Aaron, gives him a little head-tilt during the chorus, and it’s charming and devastating and infuriating.

Jasmine leans to murmur, “Oh, I see how it is.”

“Oh, shut up.”

You might not be desperate, but I’m not sure about him. He’s coming hard, baby.”

Interview

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Mila McWarren, author of The Luckiest.

Chris: Hi Mila, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book.

How do you develop your plots and characters?

Mila: I usually start with one central image – a pivotal moment or a well-delivered line – and then everything else is about (a) how we got there and (b) what happens next. Those little images usually come with characters pretty fully developed, but anything that doesn’t come immediately usually grows pretty naturally and directly from there. Characters are very easy for me; plot is harder, especially in terms of “a series of events”. I’m much more interested in watching characters grow, and sometimes what I’m most interested in is pretty internal, so the biggest challenge is always making those internal character moments have external causes and payoffs – which is generally how I think of plot.

Chris: Who doesn’t love a good hero? Tell us about your protagonist. Was there a real life inspiration behind them?

Mila: Aaron is a budding memoirist; he’s just finished his undergrad training and we’re catching him in the summer before he starts his MFA program. He fled the suburbs of Houston like his ass was on fire and landed in New York under a cloud that becomes clear within the first few pages of the book. (Spoiler: the cloud’s name is Nik.) He’s very driven, very self-possessed, and very skilled – he wants to be able to do things, because it helps him feel like he’s a little more in control.

There’s a fair bit of me in Aaron – that pursuit of self is mine, as is a need to get away from a place that didn’t feel quite right as “home”. But Aaron also grows out of a string of undergrads I’ve taught over the years. Most of my students are typically pretty happy, which in people in their early 20s frequently translates to something like “aimless”. Which is no bad thing, and I wish them their joy, but you can see the ones who come in to a classroom like it’s going to be the thing to save them, and those kids are just different – they’re running off of something different than those around them. Interestingly enough, most of them have been young women and gay young men. I’ll leave it to your blog readers to speculate about why that might be, although I have some idea.

Chris: What real-life inspirations do you use when world building?

Mila: Anything I can get! I usually try to sneak in some travel – even if it’s just an afternoon driving around and taking pictures on my phone, there’s some great value to being in that space and seeing what it feels like, what it smells like, what the traffic is like. For this book I spent a few days driving around, walking around – I visited all of the relevant schools, went to the house where the action is set, mapped out some of the little trips the characters take. I did some internet research from home, but mostly I just like listening to people and watching them interact in the world, because that’s where I think most of the good stuff is.

Chris: Did you learn anything from this book and what was it?

Mila: Heh. So what I learned most from this book was to never, ever try this thing again.

Let me explain. Part of what I was really focused on for this book was an attempt to write a romance novel that was so focused on this small group of characters that all of the plot really was driven by decisions they made. There is no real external actor, there’s no love triangle or crisis. There’s just the various hells they make for themselves. I wanted to do that because I really believe in that story; that’s how most of us live, after all.

But oh my GOD, it was hard! Pacing was tough; keeping the plot tight was difficult. I’m pretty pleased with how it turns out, but next time I write a book, a meteor is striking the Earth or SOMETHING, because never again. J

Chris: It’s your last meal on earth. What do you choose?

Mila: I’m getting on a plane and headed to Luling, Texas, where I will eat my fill at the City Market of brisket, ribs, sausage, and their addictive mustardy sauce, with a few dill pickles, one big slab of an undefinable yellow cheese (it’s kind of gross, actually, a little sweaty in a piece of plastic wrap, but it helps cut the spice a little), and a bottle (or two; this is salty, slightly spicy work) of Big Red soda. We should all be so lucky to go out this way.

Thanks for having me – this was fun!

Thank you for the interview!

About the author:

Mila McWarren grew up in Texas, but has happily made her home on the East Coast for the last decade. In her day job she works as a social scientist and has spent the last 10 years developing her fiction writing online. She lives with her husband and their two kids. Character Interview with Charlie and Titus!

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

Charlie: I guess stopping a notorious serial killer would be up there.

Titus: Landing a hot cop. *nods*

If you could have any job or profession, what would it be?

Titus: I think I’d be an obscenely wealthy corporate raider. Something with a whole lot of money and very little taking other people’s shit.

Charlie: Honestly, I can’t imagine being anything other than a cop.

Titus: My hero. *bats eyelashes*

What is your biggest regret?

Charlie: I have regrets every time I investigate a new homicide. That’s one person I couldn’t safe.

Titus: *rubs Charlie’s back then shakes his head* I don’t do regrets. It is what it is, this is the hand we’re dealt. I think we’re doin’ okay.

What is your favorite food?

Charlie: Pizza!

Titus: Coffee. What? That doesn’t count?

Who is your hero?

Titus: I’ve got my own personal hero right here. *points at Charlie*

Charlie: You’re the hero, babe. You’re the one who faced death and lived to tell about it.

Titus: Couldn’t have done that without you…

Intrigued? Check out Shadows Fall!

Thank you Charlie and Titus for the interview! And, coffee does count!!

Excerpt:

I always hated walking home alone at night on the deserted city streets. But I couldn’t ask my employees to do something I was scared to do myself, so I’d taken the late shift. In the dark, the wandering dead became nothing but sliding shadows and hissing whispers. The phrase ‘jumping at shadows’ is apt, because there were things in the shadows.

Those things slithered around me, feeling much more insidious in the murky stillness of the nighttime city. Hands in my pockets, I gripped my four inch pocket knife that I always carried. Fat lot of good it would do me against mule, but there was a killer on the loose after all.

It was ill-advised, but I still blasted my music inside my headphones. I didn’t want to hear what the spirits had to say in gloam. I mostly kept my eyes glued to the sidewalk in front of me—don’t stand out, don’t make eye contact, make yourself invisible—but I cast glances all around my periphery to keep aware of my surroundings.

A tall, skinny man approached, heading toward me on the opposite side of the sidewalk. He wore dark jeans and a black hoodie with the hood pulled up, casting his face in shadow. I found that odd, as it was one of those warm, humid nights the Southern springtime was famous for. His dark eyes glittered at me from the empty void where his face should be, obviously a trick of the poor lighting.

As he passed me, he clipped my shoulder, throwing me off balance. I wanted to turn around and yell, but self-preservation intervened. I could probably take him in hand-to-hand, but he could be packing for all I knew. I put my head down and kept walking.

I yelped when a spirit appeared in front of me—unlike what movies and television showed, they didn’t usually just pop up. He was a young man, probably about my age, with pale skin, black hair, and eyes so blue they seemed otherworldly… and he was gorgeous. I blinked, hoping he’d disappear. No such luck.

He turned his head towards the building beside us that was being renovated, the entrance to which was blocked off with caution tape. Stretching out his left arm, he pointed to it, and I could see bone-deep gouges in his wrist and forearm. He glanced at me again. Look.

“Not tonight, okay?” I mumbled, trying to step around him. In the blink of an eye, he disappeared and rematerialized right in front of me. See!

“No,” I said, getting angry. I walked straight through him. Usually when I passed through a spirit, I just felt a slick, oily cold sliding through my body—but this burned like a vat of acid had been dumped over me. I screamed and fell to my knees.

He appeared in front of me again. As I looked up at him, still reeling from the pain, it occurred to me how new he must be. When a mulo first left its body, it still maintained some measure of its humanity. It was able to take and maintain a corporeal form more easily than the older spirits, and the ability faded with each day since its passing.

He pointed again and this time, his eyes took on a pleading quality. I could practically feel his anguish.

Struggling to my feet, I brushed myself off and sighed. “Fine, I’ll look. But then you need to leave me the hell alone. I ducked under the caution tape strung across the doorless entry of the run-down building. It was almost pitch black inside, but I got a vague sense of sawhorses and scaffolds. Tip-toeing for some inconceivable reason, I made my way into some kind of vestibule or foyer. I didn’t notice anything that this mulo would be so desperate for me to see, but I couldn’t really see much at all.

My foot hit something solid and I was afraid to go any further into the dark. Who knew what kind of hazards were strewn about the construction site. I dug out my iPhone and swiped it to turn on the flashlight app. A bright light shone out of the camera flash and illuminated the dusty room in front of me—and the man lying all too still on the floor.

I screamed for the second time in five minutes, stumbled back against a plastic-draped scaffolding and dropped my phone. I assumed it landed screen up, because the room was suddenly plunged back into darkness. With my skin crawling, I felt around on the floor for the hard case. Instead, I grabbed a cold leg.

“Holy God!” I shouted, scrambling backwards and sideways until my back hit a wall. My pulse pounded and my head was spinning with the urge to pass the fuck out, either from fright or hyperventilation. My muscles were on lockdown, frozen into that gray area between fight-or-flight, but I knew I had to find my phone so I could get the hell out of there.

And the body… I’d have to call someone. I poked around with the toe of my shoe, carefully avoiding the area of blackness where I thought the body was. Finally I felt the phone. I dragged it across the floor with my foot until I was able to pick it up. Everything was illuminated once again. “Oh thank God,” I said.

But once there was light, I could see him again. His head was turned to face away from me, but I knew that it was the guy from outside. Obviously he’d wanted me to find his body. It was laid out like a sacrifice, arms stretched out to reveal the deep cuts on his arms. I shivered. My brain was finally catching up to the situation, and I realized it was entirely possible that the killer could still be here.

I quickly got to my feet and lurched toward the dim light pooling at the doorway. As soon as I was out of there, I pressed my back up against the cool façade of the building and panted to catch my breath. I see the dead all the time, but I’d never actually seen a dead body before. I wasn’t sure what to do; the only thing I could think was call Charlie.

With shaking hands, I pulled up his number on my phone—I may have entered it from the business card he gave me after chasing Jay out of the shop. I pressed send and he picked up on the first ring.

“Hale.”

“Ch-Charlie?”

“Who’s this?”

“Titus.” My voice was shaking and I was embarrassingly close to tears. “I need help.”

“Tell me where you are and I’ll be right there.”

I rattled off my general location, already soothed by the sound of his voice, the confidence in it. “Please hurry,” I said.

“Stay put, I’m on my way.”

About the author:

J.K. Hogan has been telling stories for as long as she can remember, beginning with writing cast lists and storylines for her toys growing up. When she finally decided to put pen to paper, magic happened. She is greatly inspired by all kinds of music and often creates a “soundtrack” for her stories as she writes them. J.K. is hoping to one day have a little something for everyone, so she’s branched out from m/f paranormal romance and added m/m contemporary romance. Who knows what’s next?

J.K. resides in North Carolina, where she was born and raised. A true southern girl at heart, she lives in the country with her husband and young son, a cat, and two champion agility dogs. If she isn’t on the agility field, J.K. can often be found chasing waterfalls in the mountains with her husband, or down in front at a blues concert. In addition to writing, she enjoys training and competing in dog sports, spending time with her large southern family, camping, boating and, of course, reading!
